In light of this new match, we want to tell you a little about our generous donor, Gene Hoffman. Some 130 years ago, less than a decade after our founding, HIAS resettled Gene’s grandparents, who had fled anti-semitism and persecution in Odessa, Ukraine, in the 1890s. Today, Gene is giving to HIAS in honor of his children and grandchildren, so that HIAS might be able to provide more refugees and asylum seekers with the warm welcome that his own family received generations ago.
It is for families like Gene’s, and for stories like his, that we at HIAS do the work that we do. And in spite of the challenges that this year has presented, HIAS has stepped up to provide legal aid, emergency cash-based assistance, and other vital support to refugees and asylum seekers in 16 countries.
