Dear Friend,
2020 has been a tough year for U.S. democracy. From unfounded claims of voter fraud to a norm-shattering effort to overturn the results of the presidential election, this year's election is one for the history books -- and not in a good way.
But in the face of this unprecedented assault on our democracy, America's democracy defenders stepped up to fight back. If there is a silver lining to this year's challenges, it's how many people like you have risen to meet them -- from voting, to protesting, to phone banking, to organizing. Here at MapLight, we did our part by:
- Combating online disinformation launching a new browser plug-in to fight voter suppression online.
- Identifying and spotlighting serious gaps and loopholes in our nation’s election laws and publicizing them before the election, in time to help the media and the public prepare for what was to come.
- Helping over 2 million people vote with Voter’s Edge, our one-stop online voter guide built in partnership with the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund.
- Publishing a new graphic novel – “Unrig: How to Fix Our Broken Democracy” – that explains the problems with our government and offers concrete and practical solutions to engage and inspire readers.
We're proud of what we've achieved together -- but we can't stop now. This year exposed the cracks in our democracy. Although it withstood the shocks of this year, we must put in the hard work of fixing those cracks if we want it to survive the years ahead -- or face the truly daunting prospect of history repeating itself.
Please invest in that work by donating to MapLight. We're all hoping for a brighter year ahead -- let's build it together.
Warmly,
Dan
P.S. If you're able, please consider joining us as one of our Lightkeepers and making your donation a weekly, monthly, or quarterly recurring donation. Our Lightkeepers literally help keep the lights on, smoothing out the boom/bust cycle of civic engagement around elections.
