Dear Friend,
Throughout 2020, we’ve seen the significant damage that disinformation has wreaked on our democracy, with no end in sight. Our human desire for connection has been weaponized on social media to spread misinformation that makes us less safe, more scared, and more divided. That’s why MapLight and other leading advocacy organizations have launched an open letter calling for the Biden-Harris administration to treat disinformation as a fundamental threat to our democracy.
Will you join us in urging the Biden-Harris administration to recognize and take immediate steps to address the dangerous impact of disinformation on our democracy?
We’ve already seen how disinformation has affected how people understand health facts about COVID-19, from the politicization of masks to viral conspiracies about coronavirus vaccines, and all Americans are paying the devastating price. It’s not just about public health - no major issue is untouched by the damaging impact. Climate denialism has lead to rollbacks in environmental protection, election falsehoods served as a pretext for new voter suppression laws, and racist and misogynistic disinformation incited acts of domestic terrorism, among many others.
The Biden-Harris administration has a unique opportunity to begin repairing our broken information ecosystem. Will you stand with us and let them know voters want our government to prioritize combating disinformation and its poisonous effects on democracy?
