POLITICO: “Police on Sunday said they were investigating the incidents at the Asbury United Methodist Church and Metropolitan A.M.E. Church as potential hate crimes, which one religious leader likened to a cross burning.”
That’s the reporting from the week after a mob of Trump supporters tore through the nation’s capital, where “vandals tore down a Black Lives Matter banner and sign from two historic Black churches in downtown Washington and set the banner ablaze,” in a frenzy of aggression and violence that ended in arrests.
Now that Trump’s defeat is sealed, his supporters are taking their loss out on people of color. This is despicable behavior any time, in any context -- but with a crucial runoff in Georgia looming, one that will largely be decided by voters of color, it’s particularly relevant and only all the more damaging.
As they were destroying the most beautiful and historic parts of DC, Trump’s supporters shouted: “Whose streets? Our streets.” We can’t unburn those church banners, friend, but we can prove the alt-right wrong about that. Will you stand against these deplorables now and show them America’s streets belong to lovers of peace, not war? Tell us now:
