The Trump administration has moved to restrict the criteria for granting asylum status, “a step that critics are calling the biggest crackdown of this presidency on those seeking a haven in this country,” according to POLITICO.
The clock may be ticking on Trump’s time in office, but he’s doing everything he can to cement his inhumane federal approach to immigration before he leaves the White House.
As a result of this latest vilification of immigrants, individuals who come to our country seeking refuge from gender-based or gang violence wouldn't qualify for asylum because, according to Trump, people just “claim” fear of persecution as an excuse to enter the country.
Friend, you know as well as we do that Trump’s moves to restrict legal immigration are less about improving protocol and more about promoting a white nationalist agenda that paints ‘outsiders’ as criminals to be feared. And if we refuse to take action, we’re just as complicit as the Trump loyalists who follow that divisive agenda.
Right now, we don’t have the resources we need to push back against these racist attacks on our immigration system. Ultimately, these attacks on people seeking refuge in the US are attacks on the values of compassion and diversity that our country is supposed to represent.
