There’s no use in sugarcoating it: This holiday season will be a hard one. While hope springs in the form of COVID vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, the fact remains that gatherings should be scarce. This, like everything 2020 has asked of us, is difficult. We get it: Ugly sweater parties don’t feel the same over Zoom. Puppy chow, peppermint bark, and sugar cookies just don’t taste as good when they come in the mail. Accepting these truths while also seeking to foster holiday spirit and create whatever new traditions you can with your family do not have to be mutually exclusive. The sky can have both clouds and sun. So, however you choose to celebrate the last few weeks of 2020, search for joy in the smaller moments. And go easy on yourself. The holidays demand on parents. This year, as many try to recoup what their kids lost out on the form of capital M merriment, those demands can be even higher. Do whatever it is you want to do this holiday, but keep an eye on your personal fuel gauge. One of the odd benefits of a socially distanced holiday season is that it likely provides opportunity to carve out time to replenish yourself. If you have the opportunity, take it. 2021 looks to be better. But 2020 has taken a lot out of us all. A great holiday quote, attributed to Agnes M Pahro, reads: “What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future.” Courage is certainly needed right now. But so is hope. And we hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season. |
