32% of Michigan businesses have been forced to shut down

Welcome to another edition of FT Now! The year 2020 may be coming to a close, but there’s still plenty of news to go around. In Wisconsin, voters may be confused as to whether they have a Grinch or a Governor. Apparently, Christmas trees are frowned upon by Gov. Evers. A new report has some devastating numbers for how businesses in Michigan were impacted by Gov. Whitmer’s draconian COVID restrictions over the summer. But in Florida, Gov. DeSantis is stepping in to protect workers AND the businesses who employ them. Quite the contrast, indeed. Read below for more, and have a very merry Christmas!

GOP Lawmakers Second Christmas Tree Vanishes From Wisconsin Capitol

Why You Should Care:
We’re talking about a Christmas Tree. In the age of COVID, Gov. Evers can’t let the people enjoy some Christmas cheer?
What Happens Next:
We’re not sure, really, except that in two years voters will have the chance to elect a new governor who actually respects Christmas traditions!

Governor Ron DeSantis Defends Restaurants and Bars
What Happened:
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis defended businesses this week, and without apology. "We just want to send a message," said DeSantis, "Some may want to shut you down; we want to pull you up. We’ve got your back."
Why You Should Care:
Different governors have had different approaches to handling the COVID crisis. But their policies have real-life consequences for the people in their states. Some, like Gov. DeSantis, understand the importance of being able to work. "You’re working folks, who are working hard to make a living; you have every right to do that," said DeSantis. "You can take it to the bank in the state of Florida; you’re going to have that right defended by the governor."
What Happens Next:
Floridians get to make their own informed decisions about how to handle the risk of COVID, without being forced to give up their livelihoods.
