NBC News: “While President Donald Trump continues to make noise about the election, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is quietly using the final days of Trump’s administration to make one last push to transform the judiciary and seal the president’s legacy.”
About a year ago, The Washington Post reported that Trump had selected 1 in 4 of the current federal judges, and he has appointed dozens since then. And while Americans are distracted by the Trump chaos, McConnell is confirming conservative judges to reshape the circuit courts. These courts may have the last word in federal cases that preserve the role of religion in politics, prevent gun ownership reform, and restrict reproductive and voting rights.
What does that mean for us? It means that the Republican far-right agenda will have the federal power it needs to make lasting impacts on our country, even with Joe Biden as president. It means we need to bolster Democratic support at the state and federal level, starting now, to ensure we’re prepared to fight back against further GOP attacks on our democracy and human rights.
Republicans have done enough damage in the past four years, and we can’t take our eyes off McConnell while he races to secure Trump’s legacy behind the scenes. But the fact is, we need to expand our funds and our outreach.
If Democrats lose the Georgia runoffs, McConnell will keep control of the Senate and block each of Biden’s judicial nominees, just as he did with Obama, and we will need to fight harder than ever before to defend the progressive legislation we need to move our country forward.
