NBC News: "Brandon Bernard, who was 18 when he took part in a 1999 double murder in Texas, was killed by lethal injection at a federal prison ... despite eleventh-hour attempts for court intervention."

No president in over 130 years has sought executions during their final days in office, and yet the Trump administration executed Brandon Bernard as part of an inhumane federal execution spree during Trump's lame-duck term. In total, the Justice Department has scheduled five executions before Biden can be inaugurated.

Bernard was barely a legal adult when he participated in his crime. He spent the past two decades in prison trying to prove that he "was not that person." More than that, Bernard's attorneys argued that the prosecution unconstitutionally withheld evidence. And five jurors on his case have come forward to attest that they no longer supported the death penalty for Bernard. Despite these efforts, the six conservative judges on the Supreme Court refused to grant a stay of execution.

Trump's malicious attempts to kill as many prisoners as possible before Biden comes into office just highlight the root of the issue: Why does the federal government, an imperfect system that is far from immune to racial and societal biases, decide who gets to live?
