These are the harrowing words of political scientist Lee Drutman, one of the many experts warning of the far-reaching effects of the recent Texas election lawsuit. Although SCOTUS dismissed the case, which was "widely regarded by election experts as frivolous," as The Washington Post reports, it "nevertheless attracted the support of nearly two-thirds of House Republicans, a majority of Republican state attorneys general and the current president of the United States."

With the Electoral College officially confirming Joe Biden as president-elect, the light at the end of this long four-year tunnel is finally in sight. But The Washington Post aptly notes that the "stunning escalation of a trend toward Republican authoritarianism" political scientists are describing may be indicative of "long-lasting" damage to our democracy. Now is not the time to relax -- especially with a group of Trump loyalists already planning another challenge in the House on January 6.
