Team -
On this day 8 years ago, a lone gunman took the lives of 20 children and 6 educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Devastated and shocked, Americans said "never again" - but we didn't change our federal laws, and there have been thousands of mass shootings in America since that tragic day.
I am proud that the House of Representatives has passed meaningful gun reform legislation in H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act to require a background check for every firearm sale, and H.R. 1112, to close the Charleston loophole. And I'm the author of the new Assault Weapons Ban, to get weapons of war off our streets.
It's time to prioritize the lives and safety of children, who deserve to feel safe at school. It's time to pass universal background checks, red flag laws, and assault weapons legislation to keep guns out of the hands of those who wish to cause harm. It's time to open up access to comprehensive mental health care for all, so we can identify those who need support and prevent tragedies before they occur.
We owe it to those 26 innocent souls, their families, and their communities to prevent the next tragedy before it happens. And I can't wait to get to work in Congress with a Biden-Harris administration to do just that.
Thank you for standing with me in the fight for a safer and better future.
- David
