Winter is coming. Cases are spiking. Things are bleak. And the frost-hardened months ahead are likely going to be even more so. Dad, writer, and Minnesotan transplant Reid Forgrave shared some hard-won tips about how he and his family make it through those unforgiving winters — and what they’re planning to this socially distant season. One of his suggestions? Make events out of winter moments. That is, get excited and do whatever it is you can to make winter moments feel special. Celebrate Christmas? Christmas the hell out of your home with paper snowflakes and cookies. Did it snow a lot last night? Get the kids amped for socially distanced snow tubing, show shoeing, or snow who the hell cares. Staying in to watch a movie? Make a big bucket of popcorn and get everyone in their cozy clothes. Whatever you do, go big. A Minnesotan native once described to Forgave the best way to survive a winter in the land of 10,000 lakes: You gotta step into the punch. That’s all the more necessary this year. One way to do that is to make big moments out of small events so that dark months can feel brighter. Start thinking of ways to do that now. Because if you’re not ready for it? The punch will blindside you. |
