Friend, As the sun sets on the first night of Hanukkah, I’m reminded of what underlies so many of our sacred celebrations this holiday season: the steadfast offering of light against the darkness of night. That steadfastness is what’s kept Faith in Action organizing on behalf of our communities for generations. It’s what brings us together and illuminates a way forward, even through the divisive forces of antisemitism, white supremacy, and Islamophobia. Faith in that light is why we fight for justice for millions of people like Binsar Siahaan, an undocumented Indonesian immigrant who lived in the U.S. for three decades, and is appealing a long-standing, unwarranted deportation order. Earlier this year, ICE agents told Binsar that he had to leave the faith community where he resided with his family to have his GPS monitor checked. Once outside, ICE officers handcuffed Binsar and transferred him to a facility in Georgia to await deportation. Through LA RED’s and Congregation Action Network’s faithful resistance, advocacy, public actions, calls, emails and tweets, Binsar was released and is back with his family. But for so many unjust reasons, not everyone will be reunited with family this year. And that’s why we will carry on, and continue to fight steadfastly with enduring faith. Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate, and may all of our faith be fueled with love for many nights to come. |
