Dear Friend,

2020 has seen escalating attempts to erode faith in our elections and undermine democracy through attacks on civic participation. How we respond to these efforts matters, as we consider, what is each of us doing to protect our elections?

What we do over the coming year will determine what path our nation takes in the decade ahead. Here at MapLight, we’re preparing to fortify our elections by thwarting political disinformation seeking to subvert the democratic process. We also provide detailed, nonpartisan information on candidates and their campaigns to empower even more voters in future elections.

At MapLight, we believe that an informed voter is an empowered voter. In this year’s election, our online voter guide Voter’s Edge ([link removed]) , built in collaboration with the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund, was used by more than 2 million people. That’s one in ten California voters who was able to make better-informed voting decisions about the candidates and issues appearing on the ballot.

“I am grateful a coworker told me about Voter’s Edge this morning. It made the voting process way less painful. In fact, it even felt empowering, which is not a feeling I’ve associated with voting for years.”
–Feedback provided by a Voter’s Edge user

Though this election put us through the emotional wringer and the 2022 elections may feel far off, building and maintaining key civic infrastructure between elections is critically important to be ready for 2022 and beyond.

* 91% of Voter’s Edge users said that our guide made them feel more confident about making the right choices on Election Day.
* 77% of Voter’s Edge users said that they would vote for more offices and leave fewer choices blank thanks to the information they found on our guide.

“Voter's Edge [is] a huge benefit to our society in terms of being able to get meaningful information about their candidates, propositions, and actually be able to compare them in some coherent way. Honestly, it should be something that our government provides, but until that day comes, I will continue to support tools like this. Thank you very much for providing such a wonderful resource for our democracy--it means a lot to me and to us as a society.”
–Feedback provided by a Voter’s Edge user

Together, we can help create a government that works the way it’s supposed to, that is accountable to the people.

Best,

Dan Newman
