Houston Police Chief: Mayorkas Understands Immigration, Smart Law Enforcement

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In an op-ed published on foxnews.com this morning, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo highlights reasons law enforcement leaders support President-elect Joe Biden’s choice of Alejandro Mayorkas for Homeland Security secretary.

Mayorkas "can help pursue commonsense immigration reforms that will help protect our communities and promote respect for the rule of law," Acevedo writes.

" … When immigrants feel they must stay hidden in the shadows, communities are less safe for everyone. Immigrants must feel comfortable speaking with local officials and seeking help in emergencies. Mayorkas has demonstrated that he understands this key dynamic and that he has the ability to collaborate with state and local leaders to keep our communities safe."

Acevedo also notes Mayorkas’ implementation of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and streamlining of visa processes for immigrant workers, both of which "support immigrants as key contributors to our economy and society."

Acevedo and other law enforcement leaders registered support for Mayorkas last week, when his selection was announced.

Acevedo’s op-ed is available on foxnews.com.
