We All Need the Arctic Refuge,
So Let’s Save It Now!

Dear John,

For decades, oil and gas interests have fought to open the coastal plain of the vulnerable Arctic Refuge for extractive drilling and transport. In 2017, they gained concerning ground: Congress passed a backdoor provision in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that let the Trump administration begin the process for leasing vulnerable refuge lands to oil and gas companies.

American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) and the 250,000 responsible companies we represent, strongly oppose continued extractive oil and gas activities, as these accelerate carbon dislocation in our atmosphere and further the damage of climate change. Continued drilling and transport of oil and gas reserves is especially problematic in environmentally fragile regions like the Arctic Refuge. ASBC members are aware that far more viable solutions to meet our energy needs can be found in the renewable energy industry and beyond.  ASBC supports those better solutions, not the destructive continuation of drilling for oil and gas -- least of all in the Arctic Refuge.

Legislators pay attention to business leaders, so to demonstrate that responsible businesses support protecting the Arctic Refuge, please sign on to this important letter which will be sent out to policy leaders and which has already enjoyed broad traction with businesses around the United States.

The Arctic Refuge belongs to all of us in the United States, and Refuge drilling has earned wide opposition by an overwhelming majority of Americans, for generations and on a bipartisan basis.  Americans of all political views continue to understand that the Arctic Refuge must be safe from destructive activities and instead be conserved for our future generations, Indigenous rights, wildlife, and for the health of our planet.
