There used to be a popular college dorm poster a few decades back that read "A Texan's View of the World", and it featured a massive cartoon illustration of the Lone Star State, with various major "non-Texas" cities, landmarks and continents relegated to the status of tiny dots on a distant horizon. (The joke's on us, of course.) I thought of this poster perusing the New York Times this morning, which reported that the United Kingdom has become the first country to approve Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. This just so happens to be

the same vaccine that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said last weekend was just "days away" from being distributed in the Lone Star State. By beating both the United States and the European Union to emergency authorization, the U.K. has become the first western nation to greenlight a COVID-19 vaccine for mass distribution to fight a disease that has killed 1.4 million people worldwide and is blamed for the deaths of more than 21,000 Texans according to the most recent statewide numbers. Earlier this week, Texas Standard Producer Jill Ament, who's always on top of our breaking news coverage, connected us to what we know about how the vaccine will be distributed in Texas. But even as hope swells over vaccines, the picture on the ground is getting worse. Presidio, Brewster and Culberson counties
lead the state in cases per 1,000 residents, and COVID-19 case numbers are reaching historic highs statewide. On top of this, we likely have yet to see the full impact of many holiday gatherings when it comes to the spread of the virus. Though there are signs for optimism on the distant horizon, the bottom line appears obvious: now's not the time to let our guard down. You can get caught up on the latest in the stories below. Until next Wednesday, stay safe, and we'll see you on the radio.
