For Black women in America, pregnancy and childbirth is a life-or-death crisis.
In fact, Black women are nearly four times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy-related causes. And, for every life lost, there are as many as 100 near misses that are often traumatic and involve long-term health effects.
There is no denying that racism is a main driver of these terrible birth outcomes. The need to listen to Black women and other women of color, and to transform the maternity care system, is stronger than ever.
That's why we launched a special Giving Tuesday partnership with Mamatoto Village — a community-based, Black woman-led reproductive justice organization here in the nation’s capital.
Mamatoto Village is redefining Black motherhood and improving Black maternal health outcomes … in neighborhoods not that far from the White House. Throughout pregnancy and for the first six months of an infant’s life, Mamatoto clients receive comprehensive, culturally relevant services that include health education, care coordination, labor and breastfeeding support, and counseling.
For Giving Tuesday, we are asking you to partner with us to support community-led solutions to transform maternity care for women of color.
Donate $20 or more to the National Partnership this Giving Tuesday and half of your gift will go directly to helping Mamatoto Village provide critical maternity support and programs to Black women and birthing people living in disinvested communities here in Washington, D.C.
These issues run deep and are greater than one person or organization can solve alone.
Bold legislation is required to reach more people and save more women's lives.
