** Advent Reflections: Week one ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

"This Advent season will be different from all the others we've experienced," writes composer and NCR board member Dan Schutte. "Those familiar Advent themes of longing for God and waiting in hope take on a special meaning for us in the midst of the storm that surrounds us. As always, God is perhaps giving us a special opportunity this year to grow deeper in hope and stronger in the embrace of God's love."

Join Schutte for a weekly Advent Reflection with an introduction by Schutte himself.

The video for the first week of Advent focuses on the beginning of our journey into discovering God once again, this year, this time.

** Three books about peacemaking offer solidarity, solace and hope ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------

NCR book reviewer Diane Scharper rounds up three books on violence and peace, starting with The Two Hands of Yes and No: One Family's Encounter with the Surprising Power of Active Nonviolence, written by nonviolence activists Dennis and Sheila Linn.

The Linns have lectured on healing, forgiveness and nonviolence in more than 60 countries and have written 23 books. In their latest, the Linns show that most ancient religions promoted the ideal of nonviolence.

At times in A Certain Clarity, Selected Poems, Lawrence Joseph writes between clenched teeth as his anger threatens to boil up onto the page. In the poem "Syria," for example, he writes of the imagination being transmogrified "into circles of hatred, circles of vengeance, /and killing."

I Am Not Your Enemy, written by Michael McRay, offers an intriguingly written collection of stories from those who seek peaceful solutions to violence. He adds a kind of poetry to what could be a dry subject by noticing details regarding the places and persons he's visiting.
