COVID is unkind. It’s indiscriminate, everywhere, and has taught us to fear the very thing that we hold onto in times of crises: Each other. And while kindness is no antidote to the coronavirus — that’s currently in the hands of Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca — it is a way to alleviate some of the stress and pain that an interminable year of social distance has caused.

So how can we be kind when we are cruelly far apart? With small, nice gestures. For instance: Send portioned-out ingredients for a beloved family recipe to everyone you normally see, so everyone can enjoy the recipe together. Or have the kids put on a play and livestream it for loved ones. In a world of grand problems, the little things will keep us sane and get us through. And we’re certain those you can’t see will be thankful you thought of them.
