Neighbors,

As we celebrate Thanksgiving in a year marked by great uncertainty, I am reminded of all there is to be thankful for. Not everyone has close family and friends to gather with. Some will be alone by choice, while others will choose to come together and share a meal. These trying times weigh heavily on our nation, and as always there are many people hurting and living under sorrowful circumstances.

Still, it is a time of much resilience, with strength being found in adversity. My hope is that we continue to remain grateful that we still have the opportunity to make things happen, and we will continue to come together to support one another as we face current and new challenges.

So, in the spirit of gratefulness, I want to THANK YOU for your support and for trusting me to be your representative. From the bottom of my heart, Happy Thanksgiving.

Safe Travels,

Representative Bailes Wins Re-Election
Representative Ernest Bailes has secured a third term following the 2020 general election as the Republican state representative for Texas House District 18. "I am incredibly humbled to continue serving the people of my community for another term. I have lived in House District 18 all my life, and I want what is best for our area and our people," Bailes said.
Legislative Update
The 87th session of the Texas Legislature is less than two months away, and your input is greatly valued as we work to address priority issues. See below for a summary of bills you can expect to see in 2021. There will be more to come.
Protect Private Property Rights
HB 448 ([link removed]) provides a way for private property owners to file complaints when the power of eminent domain is misused. Eminent domain should never be used as a threat, and those who misuse this authority should be held accountable.
Prevent Tax Assessments from Charging More Than 3 Years Back
Currently, appraisers may go back up to 5 years on the appraisal roll, charging property owners back taxes. This legislation would limit this from 5 to only 3 years.
Prevent Financial Abuse of Elderly Adults
This legislation guarantees seniors would be informed of options available when making changes to a life insurance policy, in order to prevent financial loss.
Keep Educational Dollars in Texas
We must certify that charter schools in Texas publicly disclose how many millions in state education funds are leaving Texas, require charter schools to use Texas banks, and prohibit them from awarding contracts to out-of-state bidders (unless there are no financially comparable options in Texas).
Promote Career and Technical Education
Our CTE certifications for students are essential in preparing them for life after high school. We want to ensure the certifications available to students align with the needs of our growing and changing Texas workforce.
Allow Electronic Publishing of Legal Notices
This bill would give government agencies the option to publish required notices on publicly accessible websites if this cost is lower than publishing in print, saving valuable taxpayer money, specifically for local governments.
Ensure Charter Schools are Held to the Same Standards as Our Public Schools
Prohibit charter schools from using Common Core, the same rule followed by our Texas public schools.
Encourage Employers to Give Veterans the Day Off on Veterans Day
After being contacted by a veteran and constituent regarding required work on Veterans Day, Rep. Bailes would like to introduce a resolution encouraging employers to give veteran employees the day of Veterans Day off from work, as a recognition of their service.
If you have legislative issues you'd like to share, please do not hesitate to contact the HD-18 office by calling (936) 628-6687 or by emailing [email protected].
