Dear friend,

Today the New York Times covered Adhikaar’s work in an article, “Nail Salons, Lifeline for Immigrants, Have Lost Half Their Business, ([link removed]) ” where they featured Rambika, a member who worked for nearly a decade as a worker, and finally made way to her American dream, by buying a salon.

It has been 226 days since lockdown in New York and over five months that salons have reopened. But Rambika’s salon nowadays sees four clients or less a day. With each day that goes by, immigrant workers, like nail salon workers, and small business owners, like Rambika, continue to struggle to make ends meet.

Meanwhile, billionaires in New York have made $960 billion just between March and November alone. They continue to make record-high profits yet women immigrant workers and entrepreneurs like Rambika struggle to stay afloat.

Here’s what YOU can do to demand change today:
1. Sign this petition here ([link removed]) to let Governor Cuomo and Senate leader Stewart-Cousins know that you support making billionaires pay to create an #excludedworkerfund and bring broad economic relief to the millions of New Yorkers who need it, including nail salon workers in our community.
2. Call into both the Governor and your local legislators ([link removed]) to voice your concerns.
3. Attend a direct action ([link removed]) in front of Governor Cuomo’s midtown office TOMORROW at noon with the Excluded Workers Campaign.

In industries as deeply embedded in Asian American immigrant communities as nail salons are, when both workers and women entrepreneurs are impacted, families and entire communities suffer.

We will continue to fight with campaigns like the Excluded Worker Campaign and other efforts to bring economic relief and justice to our communities.

Donate now to support this ongoing work. ([link removed])
In solidarity,

Pabitra Khati Benjamin
