Cuomo and Newsom are class acts

Welcome to another edition of FT Now! Let’s get straight to it. This week saw two Democrat governors exhibit some pretty egregious behavior around COVID-19. One used his spotlight to victim-blame COVID patients; the other flagrantly violated his own state guidelines to dine at a $350-per-person restaurant. Meanwhile, Mississippi’s Republican Governor Tate Reeves has proposed a radical idea that would actually help the people of his state. Read below for details!

California governor went to party, violated own virus rules
What Happened:
Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom admitted this week that he attended a birthday party with a dozen other people on November 6, at the "posh" French Laundry restaurant in California’s wine country.
Why You Should Care:
For months, Newsom has admonished Californians to stay within their households, only meet people outside, wear masks, stay socially distant, and observe a whole host of other precautions during the COVID-19 crisis. Yet it seems like he doesn’t have to play by his own rules. At best his behavior is tone deaf; at worst, it’s the ultimate example of elitist hypocrisy.
What Happens Next:
No doubt Newsom will struggle to regain any credibility for his leadership during the pandemic.

Cuomo Victim-Blames On COVID: ‘If You Didn’t Eat The Cheesecake, You Wouldn’t Have A Weight Problem’
What Happened:
At a news conference this week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo seemed to victim-blame anyone who has come down with COVID-19. "If you socially distanced and you wore a mask and you were smart, none of this would be a problem," said Cuomo. "It’s all self-imposed. It’s all self-imposed. If you didn’t eat the cheesecake, you wouldn’t have a weight problem."
Why You Should Care:
Americans have been asked to make enormous sacrifices since COVID-19 hit earlier this year. For the governor of New York to point fingers at Americans for getting sick is downright disturbing.
What Happens Next:
New Yorkers continue to put up with Andrew Cuomo.

Gov. Tate Reeves proposes phasing out Mississippi state income tax
What Happened:
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves wants to phase out his state’s income tax in order to attract new residents and businesses. "We, as a state, need to think big," said Reeves. "What can we do to make a splash? What can we do to say to the world, ‘Not only do we want you to invest capital here, we want you to move here?’"
Why You Should Care:
This is the kind of leadership Americans have come to recognize from conservative governors who push pro-growth, pro-business policies. Instead of looking to raise taxes, Gov. Reeves wants to put money back into the pockets of hardworking Mississippians.
What Happens Next:
Gov. Reeves will have to get the state legislature on board with his idea!
