John --

Workers across the country are fed up with low pay, diminishing benefits and the attack on unions. They are showing up and taking action.

Nearly 50,000 United Automobile Workers union members went on strike this week, walking out of 31 factories at 21 facilities across nine states, making it the largest strike by any union since 2007. Automation has hit workers at GM hard as they face layoffs and competition with temp-agency hiring. Workers are calling for higher pay, healthcare, job security and a profit sharing plan to empower more worker investment in the companies themselves.

Coal miners in Harlan County Kentucky have been blocking railroad track for nearly two months, with the rallying cry, “no pay we stay.” BNC Senate candidate Paula Jean Swearengin took a trip to visit the miners who are camped out after Blackjewel Mining company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and refused to pay their workers. As a coal miner’s daughter and granddaughter, Paula Jean has witnessed the struggles Appalachian workers have faced for decades.

“It infuriates me that these folks actually have to go to the extremes of sleeping in tents beside the railroad tracks in protest just to get what is rightfully owed to them,” Paula Jean said. “They just want to be paid the wages and benefits they’ve broken their backs for.”

It’s time for federal legislation protected workers and backed up their call for fair treatment, a living wage and equity in what they help to build.

Far too many Americans are working without fair pay and benefits. Far too many are tied to jobs due to the limitations of privatized health insurance. Far too many are working two or more jobs just to put food on their tables. The current president may brag about a roaring economy, but it’s NOT working for everyone in this nation.

When our candidates get elected to Congress, they will:

End right-to-work legislation
Support tuition-free trade schools, community colleges and state universities
Support paid-family leave
Support subsidized early childhood care, before and after school care and pre-K for all children
Support a federal jobs guarantee
Support a guaranteed living wage
Create laws to protect workers’ rights to unionize, organize and strike
Support immigration laws that protect migrant workers’ rights
Support Medicare for All and guarantee quality healthcare for all
Abolish legalized prison slavery set forth in the 13th Amendment
Supporting equal pay for equal work laws
Support the Green New Deal and resolutions that address job growth in the face of rising automation

A modern labor revolution is in full swing and Americans are ready for change. For far too long we’ve had a Congress that has actively chipped away at workers’ rights by passing legislation that protects corporate interests over the rights of workers. Can you contribute today to help seat representatives who will stand up for hard working Americans?
