Dear Prop 15 supporter,
Earlier this week, the Associated Press called the race for Prop 15 and we’ve lost by a very small margin; about 650,000 votes with over 17 million Californians voting (current count). There are still about 750,000 ballots left to count, so we will know the final numbers in the coming days and weeks.
On behalf of the YES on 15 - Schools & Communities First coalition, thank you for your support as we did what many said was impossible. Our people-powered coalition took on the wealthiest corporations demanding that they finally pay their fair share toward a thriving future for all of us. Despite the conditions of the pandemic, despite being outspent by corporate-backed opposition, we fought a race so close that it took a week to call, and landed within 1.9 percentage points of victory. This is a historic campaign.
While we are disappointed that we could not bring home a win this time, we are celebrating what we’ve built and preparing for the next steps on our path to eventual victory for tax fairness.
Here are a few things we hope you will remember:
This is a grassroots movement: We gathered a historic 1.7+ million signatures to get Prop 15 on the ballot (almost twice the number needed!)
We made headlines: There were over 500 earned media stories and positive opinion pieces about Prop 15
Our coalition is powerful and diverse: The coalition included over 1,600 community organizations, unions, elected officials, youth, faith leaders, educators, and small businesses across the state
We are responsive and resilient organizers: Due to the pandemic, we quickly shifted to robust digital engagement and virtual voter engagement, reaching hundreds of thousands of Californians and strengthening our base
We’ve changed the conversation: We sparked a statewide conversation about equity in our tax system and prioritizing the needs of our people over corporate loopholes
This isn’t the end. We want you to know that our coalition is committed to continuing the work and building toward the structural reform we need. We hope you’ll stay in the fight with us, too.
