Dear John,
With Joe Biden and Kamala Harris elected to lead the United States, HIAS is eager to begin a new chapter in American history — one in which refugees and asylum seekers from all corners of the globe can once again find safety and home within our borders.
But make no mistake: Realizing our vision will not be easy. We will have to unwind numerous policies from the last four years — from the harmful "Remain in Mexico" policy that has stranded thousands of people at our southern border to the separation of asylum-seeking children from their parents — and doing so will require an enormous amount of work and resources.
HIAS remains committed to making the United States a place where refugees and asylum seekers are truly welcome. But the road ahead is long, and we’ll face incredible resistance — both within and outside Washington. That’s why we’re coming to you today for your immediate support:
This election gives us an opportunity to realign our actions as a nation with our shared values — to secure safety and freedom for refugees and asylum seekers looking to rebuild their lives in America.
Polling research and this election’s results make one thing clear: Americans are ready to welcome refugees. But doing so will take time and persistence. We will have to undo many dangerous policies, like the Muslim, refugee, immigration, and asylum bans. We will have to reform our immigration detention system so that neither children nor adults are being held in detention for prolonged periods. And we will have to commit to welcoming at least the historic average of 95,000 refugees per year. We at HIAS look forward to doing the work it will take to get there — but we can’t do it alone.
We know you care as deeply about welcoming refugees and asylum seekers as we do. So at this pivotal point in our nation’s history, we hope you’ll join our fight with a contribution today:
Thank you,
