On behalf of HIAS, the global Jewish nonprofit that protects refugees, I am honored to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris. With this historic election, we are confident that the United States will reaffirm its long-standing commitment to protecting refugees.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris understand America’s role in the world and the need for governments to work together to find solutions for the plight of refugees. We are proud to be on the cusp of a new and hopeful time in the country’s relationship with refugees, and regaining America’s place as a leader in the world for human rights. 

Yet the closeness of this election puts us at HIAS on notice that we need to be more vigilant than ever in making sure refugees and immigrants feel welcome in this country, and can find protection in this world. We know that many people in our diverse community — especially people who are Black, indigenous and people of color — are feeling particularly threatened, and for good reason.

We have our work cut out for us but we look forward to working with Joe Biden and his administration to restore our country’s leadership in helping people who seek safety and freedom, and creating a more welcoming United States.
