The biggest news from the presidential race today State of the race
• Both President Trump and Joe Biden have still expressed their confidence in winning the presidential election. Now it will come down to the final ballot counts. No major outlet or network has "called" the race.
• President Trump spoke from the White House last night. Biden will reportedly give remarks this evening.
• Right now, all of America is waiting on the final vote counts from the outstanding battleground states: Arizona, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Georgia.
Battleground updates
• The Trump campaign has filed lawsuits in three states so far, but as the Washington Free Beacon reported, they are "not likely to tip the outcome of the election."
• President Trump is "cutting down" Biden's lead in Arizona as the final ballots are being counted. Arizona has 11 electoral votes.
Georgia will go to a recount and determine the U.S. Senate majority in January. "'Right now, Georgia remains too close to call. Of approximately 5 million votes cast, we’ll have a margin of a few thousand,' Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger explained. 'As we are closing in on a final count, we can begin to look toward our next steps. With a margin that small, there will be a recount in Georgia,' he added." (The Federalist) • The Georgia Secretary of State (a Republican) announced this morning that the Georgia presidential race will go to a recount. Joe Biden currently has a very narrow lead. The state will award 16 electoral votes to the winner.
• Both U.S. Senate races in Georgia will go to a run-off election on January 5. That will likely determine which party holds the majority in the U.S. Senate, so you can expect to see political groups moving quickly to start campaign work.
House Democrats' internal meeting leaked -- and it's "chaos." "'I'm furious,' Bustos told her Democratic House colleagues. 'Something went wrong here across the entire political world. Our polls, Senate polls, gov polls, presidential polls, Republican polls, public polls, turnout modeling, and prognosticators all pointed to one political environment—that environment never materialized.' The meeting soon devolved into chaos." (Washington Free Beacon) • House Democrats leaked quotes from an internal meeting (via phone call) of their caucus to reporters -- and reporters certainly shared it live on Twitter.
• Among the noteworthy moments:
-- " Virginia representative Abigail Spanberger lashed out against leftists' push to defund the police, which she said almost cost her reelection, and said that Democrats should never say 'socialism' again." (Washington Free Beacon)
-- Talking about the upcoming U.S. Senate races in Georgia, Rep. Clyburn "cautioned against running on 'Medicare for all or defunding police or socialized medicine,' adding that if Democrats pursued such policies, 'we’re not going to win.'" (New York Times)
• Nevertheless, Nancy Pelosi formally announced that she's running for Speaker of the House.
