It’s been a hell of a week, hasn’t it? In addition to the many emotions swirling about because of our very long, very drawn out, very exasperating election, the coronavirus is raging. Yesterday, the U.S. shattered its record for the most new COVID-19 cases in a single day with 102,831. This is the first time the country has surpassed the 100,000-case mark. In addition, more than 61,000 kids tested positive for COVID last week. The risk of death from coronavirus for children remains low. But these numbers are still extremely disconcerting. So, what can we do? We can look to the facts, try to focus on things within our control, and disregard things that are not. We can wear masks. We can wash and disinfect our hands. We can socially distance. We can trust in the democratic process. We can reach out to our friends and family for support. We can cook dinners and tell jokes and read bedtime stories and make big bowls of popcorn for movie nights and try to stitch together a sense of normalcy at home as best we can. We can make sure our kids feel loved and secure, even if we’re feeling stressed. We can keep an eye on election results and COVID numbers because we should. But we can also take a deep breath, turn the news off, put one foot in front of the other, and get through this week. We’ll be more resilient in the next week for it.
