Updates from ASBC - Protect Democracy + Count Every Vote

Dear John,

While uncertainty remains in the wake of Tuesday's election, it is clear that America continues to face great challenges to our economy, our health, our commitment to justice and democracy, and to our very future.

The American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) understands that the voice of responsible business leadership is more critically needed than ever today. We assert that it is crucial for our country’s wellbeing to navigate this current uncertainty with patient vigilance and we call forth all public leaders and institutions to commit to a transparent, democratic election process. Then the even bigger work begins.

To provide for the common welfare as demanded by our Constitution, the United States still urgently needs a coherent, science-based, nationwide public health strategy to gain control of a pandemic that has already killed more than 200,000 Americans; an ample, realistic financial stimulus package to reboot our seriously crippled Main Street economy; and an array of rigorous, science-based policies to mitigate the existential threat of climate change, which has already impaired businesses across our nation through escalating flood, fire and other disasters. For resilient growth, stability and allegiance to our nation’s founding values, we also need unifying leadership to heal the ongoing wounds of racial injustice and inequality, and to provide all of our workforce and families with affordable health care and paid leave.

As our country’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord became official this week, our urgent need to restore America’s once-revered leadership is especially poignant. Our country is missing an important opportunity to retake leadership of the worldwide effort to meet the challenges of the climate crisis.

Along with taking control of these enormous challenges, the next administration must also launch a massive upgrade of our nation’s severely deteriorated infrastructure, an upgrade that can create millions of good jobs our consumer-dependent economy desperately needs, while ensuring a healthier environment for generations to come.

Whatever the final results of Tuesday's election, ASBC and our members will continue to advocate for solutions to all these issues during the next administration. We also honor the historical voter turnouts of the current presidential elections and call on public servants nationwide to count all votes according to state regulations, no matter how long it takes.

In the mist of the current uncertainty, we are asking you to please help redouble our efforts to confront the challenges ahead with any contribution. At ASBC we believe that united under the purpose of constructing a better future for our country, we can make the next four years a worthy example of American resilience in times of crisis.
