Be still, our collective hearts. The first polls just closed.
In this brief but incredibly stressful interim, I wanted to send you all access to a new feature we’re trying out tonight: a Swing Left Election Night tracker. We'll update this page throughout the night as our races are called.
I also want to acknowledge that the stress many of us are feeling is not just about whether Biden and other Democrats will win, but whether Trump and the GOP will unleash their most undemocratic tactics yet in a last, desperate attempt to hold onto power. I just want to assure you: whatever unfolds over the next few days, weeks, or months, we’ve been planning for it. You can count on us to deliver strategic actions to your inbox, no matter tonight's outcome.
I know you’ve heard this a lot, but it’s worth repeating: we won’t know all the results tonight, and we may not even have a clear picture of the winner. An unprecedented number of Americans voted by mail this year, and not all states are set up (or legally able) to count them in a timely manner. That’s OK—it’s what we’re expecting. The most important thing is that all the votes are counted, no matter how long it takes.
And if we get to the end of the night with no clear winner, but Trump is slightly ahead in some Super States, don’t panic. Since Democrats tend to vote by mail in higher numbers than Republicans (especially this year), Republicans will be trying to focus on the in-person counts tonight—the so-called ‘red mirage’. Don’t let them psych you out—the vast majority of voters agree that every vote must be counted. We’ll also keep the Election Night Tracker updated and email you when there are important updates or actions to share.
I guess what I’m saying here is, stick with us tonight, and as long as it takes for the results to be clear. We've been working towards this night for four years, but tonight may not be the end. So we'll be here tomorrow and in the weeks to come to give you results, information, and any actions you may need to take.
