Join the High Fivers Club!

"What's the High Fivers Club", you ask? It started with a simple idea: There are nearly 1.2 million registered Democrats in Colorado -- what if every single one of them gave just $5 a month to the Colorado Democratic Party (CDP)?

Answer: The CDP would be the best-funded state party in the country -- with zero dollars from corporate PACs and plenty for flipping red seats to blue!

If you haven't given to the CDP yet, here's a few simple reasons why we're asking you today:

GOP Losing Streak on Recalls Continues!

Great news on the Sham Recall front this week! In addition to the previous efforts to recall State Representative Tom Sullivan and Governor Jared Polis failing, it was announced on Tuesday that the efforts targeting State Senators Pete Lee and Brittany Pettersen have also failed!

Colorado Democratic Party Chair Morgan Carroll reiterated what she has said in the past about the failed recalls Tuesday when the Pettersen and Lee recalls were said to have failed – that the conservatives bringing forth the efforts are sore losers.

"Considering that both Senators Lee and Pettersen won their 2018 elections overwhelmingly by double digits, it is hardly surprising the sore losers running these sham recalls are throwing in the towel,” Carroll said in a statement. “As has been the case with the previous failed recalls, this was never about their votes. These were far-right activists who are upset they lost so badly in 2018 and were desperate for a redo through these ridiculous recalls. The people of SD11 and SD22 saw through this sham, which is exactly why they rejected this cynical effort to overthrow their 2018 votes."

With the ridiculous recalls against Governor Polis, Senators Lee and Pettersen, and Representative Sullivan having failed now, we have one more Colorado Democrat to protect from these cynical efforts to overthrow the 2018 elections -- Senate President Leroy Garcia of Pueblo!

Check out this excerpt from National Public Radio on a story about recalls, which follow Senator Garcia around as he was canvassing his district!

GARCIA: How are you doing, sir? My name's Leroy Garcia. I'm your state senator. I wanted to drop this off for you and your family. I don't know if you're aware, sir, that they are in the process of a recall and signature gathering...

DENNIS: Yeah. Well, I don't sign those. I don't believe in that.

GARCIA: OK.

DENNIS: We elected you. I think you should stay there.

GARCIA: Thank you, sir.

Third Round Complete of the Democratic Presidential debates!

The third Democratic Debate is complete! Our country heard from ten incredible candidates, each of whom are far more qualified to be President than Donald Trump is. The ten offered concrete policy proposals and positive visions of what our country could be. Whether it's an economy that works for everyone, combating climate change, expanding access to quality, affordable healthcare, passing commonsense gun safety reform, dismantling institutional racism, or fixing our broken immigration system, the Democrats on stage offered our country a clear contrast of what a Democrat in the White House would look like compared to what we have in Donald Trump.

Denver Post Editorial: "Squarely in Donald Trump’s Corner," Cory Gardner "Failed to Protect Colorado"

Cory Gardner must be relieved to be back in Washington and far away from Colorado so he can continue to be a rubber-stamp for President Trump and Mitch McConnell’s destructive agenda instead of avoiding questions from his own constituents. But his hiding and refusing to hold public events and town halls couldn't protect him from the news that President Trump's fake national emergency would be taking away $8 million from Peterson Air Force base in Colorado Springs and put towards Trump's wall.

Construction at a military base in Colorado Springs is being deferred as part of budget shifts to pay for President Donald Trump’s wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. That comes after assurances from the White House to Republican U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner that no Colorado bases would be affected for the 2019 fiscal year.

Calling out Cory for his failure and broken promise was the Denver Post editorial board, which had rescinded its 2014 endorsement of Cory after he voted to stand with Trump's fake national emergency.

Trump took the unprecedented step of declaring an emergency at the border allowing him to divert funds from things Congress had funded to build the wall. Gardner had his opportunity to oppose this clear effort to undermine congressional authority. He had a chance to stand up for the Constitution and send a message to future presidents that they are not dictators with ultimate authority over spending and legislation. Gardner did none of those things.

Republicans at the time defended Gardner saying that the senator had secured a promise to protect Colorado’s military institutions from the cuts needed to fund the wall. This was a senator who prioritized protecting his constituents, Gardner’s supporters said. Yes, who cares about scruples and convictions when local funding is at risk? Gardner’s office even boasted that Colorado would be spared from any fiscal year 2019 cuts … failing to mention or not being aware that the fiscal year 2018 project at Peterson Air Force base was on the chopping block.

So what does Gardner say now that Colorado is losing something in this raw deal?

“It’s unfortunate Democrats can’t defend the border and defend the country at the same time,” Gardner said in a statement released after news of the cuts at Peterson.

We think it’s unfortunate Gardner can’t defend Colorado and the U.S. Constitution at the same time, or even one at a time, or just one or the other.

The Denver Post wasn't alone however. 9News' Kyle Clark also called out Cory Gardner for his failure to protect Colorado's military funding. WATCH HERE.

Volunteer of the Week: Sarah J.

Sarah started volunteering for the House Majority Project (HMP) and the Democratic Senate Campaign Fund (DSCF) right after Trump got elected. She could not sit still anymore! She had to help build the farm team and make sure legislators and candidates were well supported to do their job.

The work of the state legislature is crucial to our democracy, Sarah wants to make sure intelligent, thoughtful Senators and House Representatives get elected and are given the tools to do their jobs efficiently. The HMP and DSCF are working to protect and expand the Democratic majorities in both the state House and Senate in 2020 so that our legislators can continue to lower the cost of healthcare, strengthen the economy, and protect the climate for generations to come.
