Senate Republicans just voted to confirm Amy Coney Barrett.

We’re now left to deal with yet another ultraconservative Supreme Court Justice who thinks the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional and wants to overturn Roe v. Wade. Worse, she’ll likely sit on the nation’s highest court for decades.

The American people overwhelmingly did not want a new justice confirmed before the presidential inauguration, but Republicans in Congress had no regard for the will of the people. All they care about is power and their extreme agenda.

We now have a Supreme Court with a 6-3 conservative majority that may dismantle the Affordable Care Act next year, roll back LGBTQ+ rights, and overturn Roe v. Wade. But we do not have to accept this as a permanent reality.

If we are to have any hope of the courts upholding the progressive legislation passed in the new Congress, then expanding the Supreme Court is our only option.

Trying to build a progressive future without taking action to rebalance the court would be like bringing a knife to a gunfight. Our democracy is in crisis. Our civil rights and civil liberties are on the line. It’s time we act like it.

Republicans in Congress will try to call this a power grab, but we must be clear that this is not about power — this is about protecting and repairing our democracy.
