The Coordinated Campaign has created a high Dem supporter, low turnout phone bank for NHCDP volunteers for the remainder of Early Voting, which ends Saturday.

Judges Must Be "Fair, Impartial and Independent," Court of Appeals Candidate Gray Styers Says

Gray Styers, a practicing lawyer with over 30 years experience in almost every county in North Carolina is running for Seat 6 on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. "I will not be beholden to any special interest or particular ideology," Styers said. "I believe judges must treat every person in every case with dignity and respect – without regard to privilege or status."  

 

Gray Styers holds a Law Degree and M.B.A from UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a Law Clerk for Chief Judge Sam J. Ervin, III on the US Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit. He was an adjunct professor of Legal Ethics at UNC School of Law and is the former president of the Wake County Bar Association and a member of NC Bar Association Board of Governors.

 

The candidate's wife of 30 years is an ordained Presbyterian minister, and the couple has two children. He said his "guiding stars will be upholding the rule of law for everyone, respecting the value of settled legal precedents, and safeguarding the protections of our Constitution. I am running for judge on the Court of Appeals to serve those values." Styers has been endorsed by former judges, justices, and many statewide organizations, plus the Raleigh News & Observer and The Charlotte Observer.

 

Patricia Shields Has Appeared in Over 50 Appeals Court Cases; Seeks Seat 4 on NC Court of Appeals

 

Patricia Shields has been ranked among the top 50 women attorneys in North Carolina and is running against an opponent she says has no appellate experience. "My opponent . . . is running to be a 'conservative judge,' and denies that systemic racism exists in our justice system," Shields said. "I am aware that systemic racism exists, and believe that the problem cannot be addressed until all elective officials acknowledge it."

 

Shields started her career 35 years as a law clerk to Chief Judge Hedrick of the North Carolina Court of Appeals. In the 33 years since, she has had an active trial and appellate practice, representing North Carolinians before every level of our courts in a wide variety of cases. In addition to her full time practice, she has taught Trial Advocacy at Campbell Law School for the past seven years. Shields was born in Elizabeth City, grew up in Durham, and has lived in Wake County for over 30 years. Her husband, Grady, is an environmental lawyer, and the have two grown sons:  Will is a social worker in Richmond, and Ben is an economist, working in Washington.  

 

 

Christopher Brook Says He is "Most Experienced" Candidate for Seat 13 on NC Court of Appeals

 

Before Governor Roy Cooper appointed Christopher Brook to the Appeals Court in 2019, he had been legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina for seven years. He was admitted to practice in North Carolina state courts as well as each federal district court in the state, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Brook successfully litigated matters in both state and federal court, including before the Supreme Court of the United States. He is now seeking election to Seat 13 of the NC Court of Appeals. 

 

Brook, who grew up in Raleigh, received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He first practiced law in the Raleigh office of Cranfill, Sumner & Hartzog. He then worked as a staff attorney at the Southern Coalition for Social Justice in Durham. a. I was admitted to practice in North Carolina state courts as well as each federal district court in the state, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. I successfully litigated matters in both state and federal court, including before the Supreme Court of the United States. He and his partner Moira live in Chapel Hill. 

 

"My first priority each day I walk up the steps of the Court of Appeals is to treat the North Carolinians appearing before me fairly and with respect," Brook said. "Since being appointed to the bench by Governor Cooper in April 2019, I have authored more than 85 opinions speaking to my diligence, independence, and respect for all North Carolinians appearing in our court. In contrast, my opponent has never served as a judge on the Court of Appeals, nor, to my knowledge, ever led litigation in the Court of Appeals, the North Carolina Supreme Court, or any other appellate court."

 

NHCDP Office Now Has Office Hours 6 Days

 

The New Hanover County Democratic Party office still has a lot of signs for the Biden Harris signs as well as down ballot candidates.  The office is at 5041 New Centre Drive, Wilmington will now be staffed on Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 6:00 p.m. We will use the office primarily for pick up and drop off of yard signs, blue ballots and similar items. We do not anticipate scheduling meetings there. Our office phone number is (910) 805-5703.  Please wear a mask and observe social distancing. One visitor at a time in the office. Others, please wait in the hall.

 

We still have about 20 4 x 8 foot Biden/Harris signs, and would appreciate your help finding them good homes. Put one on your porch, your garage door, or hang it from your balcony - it only needs to last one more week!

Team Joe supporters from Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender counties are invited for a virtual phone bank to make phone calls to voters. Training will be provided.

North Carolinian Women for Biden are reaching out to women to talk about why Joe Biden and our Democratic ticket is the right choice for North Carolina. NC Women for Biden will provide the training, camaraderie, and support volunteers needed to text and talk to their friends and family. All volunteers need a fully-charged smartphone, a laptop or computer, and your enthusiasm for Biden Harris 2020.

The Marcia Morgan campaign to turn the NC House 19th District blue ask volunteers to donate time! Donate your time calling potential voters on behalf of Team Marcia. We provide the training, the script, the names and numbers -- violunteers provide the phone and the willingness to help. Multiple shifts are available.
