GETTING OUT THE VOTE

We are only a couple of weeks away from the federal elections and it's more important than ever to make sure Muslim Americans understand their right to vote. To date, we've registered nearly 200 community members to vote by tabling at mosques all across the city and activating our #MillionMuslimVoters youth ambassadors to spread the word amongst our youth. In the upcoming weeks, we will be conducting phone-banking in partnership with Emgage NY to help get out the vote in key swing states. We need your help to phonebank with us! We are also looking for poll monitors to help monitor the election. Email our coordinator Ali Kaba, at [email protected] for more information.

October is domestic violence awareness month. With COVID-19, the rates of violence have increased substantially. Hence, we wanted to do our part in standing in solidarity with the victims and putting in place real systems by which the message of ending violence against women and DV is loud and clear. We've been partnering with our faith leaders to put up posters in mosques throughout the city which is a visible show of solidarity with victims. We're also creating the hashtag #MuslimWomenStrong to highlight stories of survivors and inspirational women in our community. Be sure to check out our youth-led panel discussion on Saturday, October 24th with practitioners and faith leaders!

MCN was invited on September 30th, 2020 to present a diversity education workshop to the New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. We were joined by 30 residents, nurses, and doctors who learned about Islam and medicine and the guidelines for how Muslims view end-of-life care.

Finally, MCN has been sharing our experience on responding to the COVID-19 crisis on numerous forums. We are grateful to have participated in a national panel with Religions for Peace USA as well as being featured on American Islamic Radio to talk about our hotline services. Be sure to check out these videos on Facebook.

Apart from this, we are continuing to run our soup kitchen every month. We are also planning to establish several community fridges across the city to help create better food access. Make sure to reach out to us with any leads or observations on which communities may be in need of this.

We want to remind the community that NYC is providing free COVID-19 testing all across the city. To access a site, please call the Test & Trace Hotline, a one-stop source for all things Test & Trace. Just dial 212-COVID19 (212-268-4319).

There are many ways to get involved and help build our community. Do consider also donating with your best capacity to ensure that we continue to be a resource for the community.

With Gratitude,
