Friend,

I want to share the facts about Initiative 1639, which expanded background checks, strengthened the rules for semi-automatic assault rifles, and created a safe storage incentive.

Nearly 60% of Washingtonians voted for Initiative 1639 in 2018. The benefits were obvious.

My opponent, Loren Culp, does not agree with facts -- or the majority of Washington voters.

It's important we share facts, not rhetoric, about gun safety. But first, I hope you'll stand with me in support of this evidence-based measure overwhelmingly passed by Washington state voters: Add your name to join me in supporting Initiative 1639 and all commonsense gun violence prevention policies.

I would have hoped that as a law enforcement official, Loren Culp would support policies that take meaningful action to keep our communities safe. Instead, here's what he really thinks on his own campaign website:

The Washington State Constitution says, "The right of the individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself or the state shall not be impaired". The Declaration of Independence declares that governments are instituted to protect citizen's rights.

It is this principle that guided Loren's actions to say "No" to i1639. If we would have had police that stood by this principle to do what is right and protect citizen's rights, as Loren did, Rosa Parks would not have been taken to jail and millions of Jews would not have been sent to their deaths.

Here are some actual facts that Loren Culp and voters across the state should know:

We're seeing a dangerous increase in gun violence this year, as the stay-at-home orders enacted across the country in March led to a surge of gun sales. The Brookings Institute estimated that in March alone more than 700,000 more guns were sold than normal.

In the first seven months of 2020, Seattle processed 55% higher background checks than the city's average for the entire year. Redmond saw a 268% increase, Kirkland saw a 145% increase, and Kent saw a 119% increase.

It's clear that Initiative 1639 is even more important this year than when it was overwhelmingly passed in 2018. It prevents anyone under the age of 21 from purchasing a semi-automatic rifle. Even if you're 21 and over, it requires enhanced background checks, training requirements, and more to purchase semi-automatic rifles.

These measures save lives. This shouldn't be political -- this is really about public health. But when Loren Culp refused to enforce this law in his own county, he signaled how he'd respond to another public health crisis: ignoring mask mandates and holding large in-person rallies despite the risks due to COVID-19.

I stand behind commonsense, evidence-based gun violence prevention measures, including Initiative 1639. It's our responsibility as leaders to support public health measures that keep our citizens safe: If you agree, stand with me today in support of Initiative 1639 and against the hateful rhetoric of Loren Culp.

Very truly yours,

Jay
