On the campaign trail today
Senate Judiciary Committee members say they'll subpoena Twitter CEO to testify next week. "'Just minutes ago, I tried to share that story on Twitter and Twitter is actively blocking, right now this instant, stories from The New York Post alleging corruption and the Biden family receiving millions of dollars from communist China,” Cruz continued. 'This is election interference and we are 19 days out from an election. It has no precedent in history of democracy. The Senate Judiciary Committee wants to know what the hell is going on." (Daily Wire) Once again, this is a rapidly developing story. Here are the key elements so far:
-- Yesterday the New York Post alleged that it reviewed a copy of the hard drive of Hunter Biden's computer, and says that it found a "smoking-gun email." (For an overview: National Review has a thorough review of the allegations and alleged email content.)
-- National Review explains what happened next in a sharp editorial worth your time: "Instead of simply asking pertinent questions, or debunking the [New York] Post’s reporting, a media blackout was initiated. A number of well-known journalists warned colleagues and their sizable social-media audiences not to share the story."
-- Facebook said it would be "reducing [the story's] distribution on our platform," with the implication that may be changed if the story is verified by one of the social media site's third-party fact-checkers.
-- Twitter went further: it blocked sharing of the link to the New York Post story and suspended some accounts that shared it. That ended up including: ---- the official account of President Trump's re-election campaign ---- the New York Post's primary Twitter account ---- the personal account of White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany
-- Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey even said last night in a tweet: "Our communication around our actions on the @nypost article was not great. And blocking URL sharing via tweet or DM with zero context as to why we’re blocking: unacceptable."
-- Now, as the quote and story above explain, the Senate Judiciary Committee has said it will call on Dorsey to testify before the Senate next week.
From Sen. Cruz's comments: "Chairman Lindsey Graham and I have discussed this at length and the Committee today will be noticing a mark-up on Tuesday to issue a subpoena to Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee next Friday, to come before this Committee and the American people and explain why Twitter is abusing their corporate power to silence the press and to cover up allegations of corruption."
Kamala Harris off the campaign trail after her communications director and a flight crew member test positive for COVID-19. "'Senator Harris was not in close contact, as defined by the CDC, with either of these individuals during the two days prior to their positive tests; as such, there is no requirement for quarantine,' Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a statement." (POLITICO) First, and most important, our prayers are with the staff and all those diagnosed with COVID-19 for a rapid, full recovery.
Here are the key details on this story, though more will likely be released later today:
-- Kamala Harris' trip to North Carolina today was canceled due to two people -- Harris' communications director and a flight crew member -- testing positive for COVID-19. Our prayers are with them and all those affected by COVID-19 for a rapid, full recovery.
-- Harris was reportedly "not in close contact, as defined by the CDC" with either person who now has COVID-19. She also reportedly had a negative COVID test as recently as yesterday, October 14.
-- Biden's campaign manager also said no other campaign staff, including Joe Biden, interacted with them "since testing positive or in the 48 hours prior to their positive test results."
-- Harris' campaign travel has been canceled through the weekend. Her husband will return to campaigning tomorrow.
President Trump and Joe Biden both on TV for townhalls tonight as second debate was canceled. "NBC News faced a sharp backlash to its decision to host President Donald Trump for a town hall Thursday in direct competition with ABC’s event with Democrat Joe Biden, including a social media call to boycott the network. [...] During an interview with Biden’s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, [MSNBC host Rachel] Maddow asked whether she was 'as mad as everybody else' about the Trump town hall." (USA Today) • What's happening: The debate commission canceled the second presidential debate. But the show will still go on tonight as President Trump and Joe Biden will participate in simultaneous townhalls.
President Trump will speak with Florida voters on NBC while Biden will join Pennsylvania voters on ABC.
• What's at stake: First, after the debate commission unilaterally canceled its second event, this is the next best thing that voters could hope for. Both presidential candidates will still take the stage and speak with voters -- albeit in different states and on different TV networks.
Second, many on the left and in the media reportedly disagree with NBC's decision to host President Trump in a simultaneous townhall.
Katie Couric called it "bad for democracy," though how having our president answer questions directly from the American people is harmful to democracy, we truly don't understand.
