Team – Donald Trump is unfit to be President of the United States.
That has been clear from his very first day in office. But ever since his COVID-19 diagnosis and subsequent hospitalization, Trump’s erratic behavior has led to some serious questions.
That’s why House Democrats released legislation to establish an independent commission under the 25th Amendment to evaluate a president’s capacity to discharge the powers and duties of his constitutional office and transfer power to the vice president if necessary.
We’ve got to vote Donald Trump out in November. But once he’s gone, we have some serious work to do to clean up our institutions to ensure another Donald Trump doesn’t get anywhere near the White House.
Trump’s COVID-19 diagnosis wasn’t just a horrific example of his inability to get a handle on this pandemic – it was a Constitutional crisis in the making. The Trump administration has refused to be completely open with the American people about the president’s health, forcing leaders in Congress to discuss the next steps – including when to transfer presidential powers.
The 25th Amendment is less than 400 words and has never been tested to its full potential. This legislation would allow independent, bipartisan experts to help Congress decide when and how to transfer presidential powers in the event a president is incapacitated.
This is a crucial step to ensuring the key pillars of our democracy hold up under stress – it’s just common sense.
