It’s not their first time at the rodeo. Espy and Hyde-Smith faced off in the Senate special election in 2018 — and Espy came within four points of winning the seat.

Hyde-Smith is as right-wing as they come. During the 2018 campaign, she was caught at a public event saying about one of her wealthy supporters, “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be in the front row.”

Mike Espy was the first African-American elected to Congress from Mississippi since Reconstruction, serving three terms in the House.

His appointment as Secretary of Agriculture during the Clinton administration was the first time an African-American and a person from the Deep South had served in that position.
