She fought for women’s freedom in Saudi Arabia. Now, she’s lost her own.

Your Words Have Power. Show Your Support for Human Rights Activists Now »

Dear John,

For some, the female-led protests in Saudi Arabia demanding women’s right to drive are a distant memory. But many of the women involved have not forgotten.

In fact, many of them — including Nassima al-Sada — are still sitting in jail cells. Nassima spent the first year of her imprisonment without being charged or brought to trial, and for a full year she was locked away in solitary confinement.

Nassima is one of the seven cases who are featured in this year’s Write for Rights, the world’s largest grassroots human rights letter-writing campaign launched by Amnesty International. You can sign your name to show your support for these activists — including Nassima — who have been attacked, harassed, and imprisoned.

Amnesty has documented evidence of ill-treatment, imprisonment, and other abuses against many of these activists. And each fall, people across the globe — from the U.S. to Australia — sign cards, send petitions, and stand together to call for justice for those whose basic human rights are being attacked. Every year the campaign grows, in numbers and strength.

Through the power of collective action, your letter can help convince government officials to free people like Nassima and others unjustly imprisoned and facing other abuses. Letter writing has always been at the heart of Amnesty International’s work, and 60 years of activism shows us that words have power.

Before she was arrested, Nassima wrote about the political participation of women in her country. She was repeatedly targeted, harassed, and placed under travel bans for her courageous activism and willingness to speak truth to power. Now, she is denied visits from her family and even her lawyer.

We are working tirelessly to free her, but we need you and thousands of others to step up and demand the same. Please, send your letter now on behalf of Nassima and other human rights activists who urgently need your help.

John, it can feel at times like we are fighting an uphill battle against human rights abuses and violations around the world. But I promise that together, our actions can lead to wins. Write for Rights has freed dozens of people since its inception, and we’re emboldened to free and protect even more people this year.

Thanks in advance for speaking out.
