John -- with 26 days left until votes are counted, our momentum is surging -- we have a serious shot to win this election. Many voters and supporters have been asking what I'll bring to the table on the Council if I'm elected, so I thought I'd share some top priorities for the first 100 days.
Here's my "100 Day Plan" broken down by what I think are two huge areas of focus for DC right now -- recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, and building a more equitable city for all District residents.
Immediate COVID-19 Recovery Policies:
Issue a one-month sales tax holiday for DC small businesses to spur spending, keep our businesses afloat, and ensure workers remain employed.
Continue to strengthen eviction protections for DC residents who have lost their livelihood due to the pandemic and are now at risk of losing their housing.
Distribute PPE to vulnerable DC residents with the greatest need. COVID-19 cases are on the rise in DC, and we must keep our residents safe.
Steps to Create a More Equitable DC:

Expand the Home Purchase Assistance Program so more residents can become first-time homeowners. We must also modify the program to increase Black and Latino homeownership opportunities. I view this as the single best way to close the racial wealth gap here in DC, but it can't be the only solution we enact.
Create universal afterschool programming for students, with a focus on skills that enable more kids to find their passions and get a good-paying job. We can identify the gaps in our labor market and teach skills in computer programming, STEM, and vocational trades.
Improve our job training programs by tying the government contracts to a jobs guarantee and once again identifying the specific labor shortages to fill in the gaps. I know firsthand that we face a District-wide shortage of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, pipefitters, and so on. Many of these professions offer $60,000 as the entry-level salary. If we empower DC residents to obtain good jobs, we will see a significant reduction in crime and poverty.
