Trump, Tillis Test Positive for COVID-19; Trump Medivaced to Hospital

COVID skeptic Donald Trump has now become COVID patient Donald Trump. President Trump announced via Twitter about 1 a.m. Friday that he had tested positive for coronavirus. By Friday evening Trump was boarding the Marine One helicopter to be flown to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Virginia "for a few days." White House spokespeople said during the day Friday that Trump had minor symptoms and was being sent to the hospital "in an abundance of caution." The White House later revealed that Trump had received "compassionate use" permission to take an experimental antibody cocktail that has not been approved for use outside medical trials.

At least ten other high profile Trump associates announced positive COVID-19 tests last week, including North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis. Tillis, who is trailing in polls to Democrat Cal Cunningham in his reelection bid, tested positive along with at least four other people sitting in the front rows of a September 26 White House Rose Garden ceremony announcing the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court (see photo at left). As with most Trump events, the ceremony was held without social distancing or mask requirements.

Close Trump aide Hope Hicks was the first White House official to have a positive COVID test revealed on Thursday evening. Her condition was not announced by the White House; it was released by a reporter. Trump knew of the Hicks diagnosis on Thursday but still held a fundraising event at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey Thursday afternoon, hours before confirming his own positive status.

'Make health care more affordable,' says State Rep Candidate Marcia Morgan

Retired Army Colonel Marcia Morgan says the skills honed in the military prepare her to be productive as the representative for House District 19 in the North Carolina legislature. "People are tired of their representatives refusing to collaborate and find workable compromises," Marcia said. "Throughout my military career I was selected for leadership positions because my superiors knew that I could accomplish difficult tasks, find consensus, make the best use of scarce resources and deal with challenging personalities. I’ll bring these skills, as well as common sense and a commitment to work across the aisle, to get things done."

As COVID continues to impact our state and local communities, Marcia said her top priority would be making healthcare more affordable, starting by expanding Medicaid followed closely by economic reforms geared toward getting everyone back to work. Her long term priorities are to strengthen public education by raising teacher pay and per-pupil spending to at least the national average and by making corporate polluters pay rather than allowing cleanup costs to be passed along to taxpayers.

Marcia, who was an educator before joining the Army, purchased a house in the area in 2000 and moved here full time in 2012. "I enjoy living in Carolina Beach and love being a part of such a caring community," she said.

Women to Women 'Friendbank' Kicks off Wednesday

North Carolinian Women for Biden start a new effort Wednesday "to reach out to the women in our lives to talk about why Joe Biden and our Democratic ticket is the right choice for North Carolina!" The Friendbank, as it is called, will involve calling to encourage potential Biden/Harris supporters. NC Women for Biden will provide the training, camaraderie, and support volunteers need to text and talk to their friends and family. All volunteers need is a fully-charged smartphone, a laptop or computer, and your enthusiasm for Biden Harris 2020.

The virtual phone bank will be run on eight occasions from Wednesday to October 28. Click here for details and to volunteer.

Needed: Poll Greeters and Lit Drop Volunteers

We need Poll Greeters:  One of the more successful programs initiated by New Hanover Democrats in recent years is the Blue Ballot program.  Blue Ballots are a half page slate card with early voting information on the back, which we print on blue paper on a half page.  In previous years we recruited poll greeters who would approach voters and offer a blue ballot. In the middle of the pandemic we expect a more socially distanced role. Instead of approaching voters with literature we recommend that interactions be limited to offering blue ballots from a distance like a carnival barker.

We accomplish a lot with Blue Ballots. It has become common for voters to show up at the polls asking for them. This year Sally Meserole has again agreed to schedule volunteers to staff polling places to distribute Blue Ballots. Sign up here to volunteer to be a Poll Greeter.

Also needed: Lit Drop Volunteers In this unusual election year we are trying to find ways to support Democratic Candidates without risking the health of our volunteers. Traditionally we have told volunteers that the single most effective thing they can do is door to door canvassing. For this year, we think that is too much to ask.

However a literature drop should be safer. The idea is for volunteers to get a list of doors to hit, and to leave literature on each one, without knocking or ringing doorbells. Masks will be worn, of course.

We need volunteers.  Several campaigns and Precinct organizations are planning Lit Drops. You can volunteer to drop literature, or to be an organizer, providing walk lists and Lit to volunteers. Click here to volunteer now.

Instead, the Leslie Cohen for New Hanover County Board of Commissioners campaign needs volunteers to help spread Leslie's message across New Hanover County by lit-dropping in neighborhoods. This can be done on the volunteer's schedule at any time of day, since the campaign isn't trying to reach voters face-to-face. Lit-dropping involves dropping off campaign literature at voters’ homes. Safety is the campaign's biggest priority. Volunteers probably won’t have to interact with anyone as they drop off literature, but they will wear a mask just in case and use gloves and/or carry hand sanitizer to use as needed.
