Yesterday, the Supreme Court officially began a new term, and already we have cause to be deeply concerned about the direction our judiciary is heading.
Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito released a statement arguing that the Court should overturn the landmark Obergefell decision and take away marriage equality.
They gave us a very clear window into how a solidly conservative Court, with Amy Coney Barrett in a 6-3 majority, would likely rule — and Senate Republicans show no signs of stopping their swift confirmation rampage despite 6 percent of their caucus testing positive for COVID.
So let’s not be naive: the only defense we have against a Court that is hostile to the hard-won civil rights gains of LGBTQ+ Americans is to expand the Supreme Court.
This issue is personal to me, and it’s personal to all of us. The Supreme Court has a huge role in determining whether members of the LGBTQ+ community like me can get married or be protected from workplace discrimination, whether we uphold the Affordable Care Act, or whether women will have safe access to the full range of reproductive health services.
No matter who the President is, a 6-3 conservative Court would have the power to reverse any progress we have made in the past few decades and prohibit any progress Joe Biden seeks to make while in office.
I’m excited to lead on issues of judicial reform when I get to Congress. This is the only chance we’ve got to protect our democracy and keep America moving forward.
So if you agree that we must fight for our progressive values and expand the Supreme Court, please make a donation to my campaign to help send me to Congress to fight for this cause. [[link removed]]
Thank you for your support. These are trying times for our country, but I promise to stay on the frontlines of this fight because too much is on the line. I hope you’ll have my back.
Onward,
