There's sickening news coming out of Attorney General William Barr's office. After a 16-year moratorium, Attorney General William Barr has ordered the federal government to resume its use of the death penalty.

Tell attorney general Barr: No more executions! Sign the petition.

He's made this choice despite the fact that:

* Reinstating the death penalty means innocent people may be executed. The latest data shows that for every nine individuals executed, one person on death row has been exonerated.

* The death penalty has always been racist in its application. In 96% of states reviewing race and sentencing of the death penalty, a pattern of race-of-victim or race-of-defendant discrimination, or both have been demonstrated.

* The death penalty does not lower the rate of capital crime. Consistent with prior studies, a 2016 study by the FBI found that the South had the highest murder rate. The region also accounts for upwards of 80% of executions. At home in the Northeast, we account for 1% of all executions, and the lowest murder rate.

* There is mounting evidence that all methods of execution constitute cruel and unusual punishment, which is illegal. Since 1976, executions have been conducted by lethal injection, electrocution, gas chamber, hanging, and firing squad.

We cannot allow our Department of Justice to execute federal inmates in our name. Add your name to demand William Barr halt the federal government's use of the death penalty.

As of April 1, 2019 - 2,673 lives depend on it.

Thank you,

Jim
