The Vote

With 34 days to Election Day 2020, here's the news that you'll want to know:

(1) the mainstream media wants to cancel the presidential debates (of course)

(2) 99,477 New York voters receive "erroneous" ballots with other peoples' names on the envelopes

(3) developing: Comey testifies to the Senate on the FBI's Russia investigation today

And on the campaign trail today:

President Trump will be in Minnesota tonight for a campaign rally. Joe Biden is on a train tour (no, we're not making this up) in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He'll make three stops today across both states.

Surprise, surprise: the media wants to cancel the presidential debates.

"Numerous media figures and pundits are calling to cancel future presidential debates after the first showdown between President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden on Tuesday night. Biden has so far rejected calls by the media and elected officials such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to skip debating Trump." (Daily Wire)

• What's happening: In perhaps the least surprising news story of 2020, the mainstream media is now making the case for canceling the remaining presidential debates ... even though the Biden campaign has said he wants to continue.

President Trump and Joe Biden will debate again on October 15 and October 22; the VP debate between Vice President Pence and Kamala Harris is October 7.

• What's at stake: The media is blaming President Trump, but they're echoing an old line that was previously pushed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Biden has intentionally run a low-key, out-of-the-spotlight campaign, even though it has concerned members of his own party. He has ducked press questions and refused media interviews, including one with Chris Wallace in July. And he has been unusually reliant on teleprompters in his brief media and speaking appearances.

In fact, Biden has been a "no-show on the campaign trail," as this Daily Wire piece lays out. He's frequently called "lids," i.e. an end to public campaign events, early in the morning, and he has done very limited travel away from Delaware.

One of the assumptions the left -- and the mainstream media, but we repeat ourselves -- has made about the 2020 election is that it's Biden's to lose ... so they believe if Biden just stays out of the spotlight and stays silent on far-left policies like packing the Supreme Court, he'll win on November 3rd.

We'd question that logic.

But we're glad that, for now at least, the Biden campaign is committed to continuing the debates.

99,477 New York voters receive erroneous ballots and need new ones sent out to them.

"One Brooklyn voter told CNN he fears the mistake could lead to somebody else casting a vote in his name. 'Presumably, someone out there has an envelope with my name on it, and if they don’t read the ballot as closely as I did, they could cast a vote in my name,' Anders Kapur said." (Washington Free Beacon)

• What's happening: A story we shared with you yesterday is worse than expected: in total, 99,477 voters in Brooklyn have received ballots with other peoples' names on the security envelopes for their ballots.

The election board blamed a third-party vendor; they'll be sending new, correct ballots and envelopes out to voters.

But the mistake could have serious consequences:

-- "If a voter were to sign the mistaken envelope, the ballot would be invalidated, according to city law," as the Daily Caller explained.

-- And, as one voter explained (quoted above from the Washington Free Beacon), he's worried someone else could vote in his name. As the voter explained, "Presumably, someone out there has an envelope with my name on it, and if they don’t read the ballot as closely as I did, they could cast a vote in my name."

And don't forget: in Queens, residents said they incorrectly received mail-in ballots designated for military service members -- and they're civilians.

• What's at stake: First, and most important, Americans must be able to vote!

These errors are concerning, especially because the mistake in Brooklyn might lead to voters' mail-in ballots being invalidated.

Second, this shows that President Trump and Republicans have been correct to raise concern about widespread, last-minute voting by mail.

There are concerns about voter fraud but also logistical concerns, as these seem to be clerical or printing errors that nevertheless could have major consequences.

Experienced lawyer Cleta Mitchell laid out actions that must be taken right now to prevent a logistical "disaster" with widespread mail-in voting. Check out her report now.

Former FBI Director James Comey testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee today.

"Comey has previously said he learned many of the details of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation from what has been publicly reported. The former director stated in December 2019, following the release of the IG report, that he 'didn’t know the particulars of the investigation' while he head of the FBI." (National Review)

• What's happening: The Senate Judiciary Committee has continued its investigation of Crossfire Hurricane, the now-infamous code name for the FBI's investigation of President Trump and Russia.

Former FBI Director James Comey is testifying before the Senate today; look for news stories about it throughout this afternoon and evening.

• What's at stake: Russia hasn't been at the forefront of the 2020 election as it was in 2016. But it's still noteworthy -- and of interest to many Americans -- that Comey this morning said he didn't know the "particulars of the investigation," even though he was FBI Director.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) was blunt: "Mr. Comey, with all due respect, you don’t seem to know anything about an investigation that you ran."

And Sen. Ted Cruz (R-UT) didn't hold back, per Fox reporting: "You were either deliberately corrupt or woefully incompetent -- and I don't believe you were incompetent."
