Hello,

Welcome to my latest e-newsletter. After what has been a momentous and challenging week in our national politics, here's this week's update on some of my recent activities in Cheadle and in Parliament.

STOP PRESS - Cheadle Village Set to Get Chunk of New Towns Fund

Seeing that the Domesday Book village of Cheadle needed 21st Century investment, I have repeatedly made the case for regeneration money for the town.

So I was delighted to get the news this morning that Cheadle is one of 100 towns that will be able to get up to £25 million from the Government's new £3.6 billion Towns Fund. When so much of the conversation revolves around the north's cities, it is fantastic news to hear about serious sums of money being pledged to our towns too.

We have great local groups and charities doing fantastic work in the area, so I also want them to be part of the process and get to realise their vision for the area.

More details will be announced soon on how the scheme will operate, but a 'Town Deal' for Cheadle worth up to £25 million will make a huge difference locally. In the meantime, you can read more here ([link removed]) .

Spending Review Delivers

The Chancellor this week confirmed £2.6 billion extra for schools, £1 billion for social care and £750 million for police recruitment. Also pleased to welcome commitment of funding for the fast rail link between Manchester and Leeds, Northern Powerhouse Rail. You can watch my question here ([link removed]) .

National Citizen Service

Visiting our National Citizen Service 3 week summer programme in Stockport, the energy and drive from participants was clear for all to see. NCS helps people aged 15-17 learn important life skills and build their confidence through social action projects and activities such as sampling student life while living in halls of residence. It was great to speak to them.

Visit to BASF

Supporting businesses large and small is hugely important to people in Cheadle. Meeting with Richard Carter of BASF was a timely opportunity to discuss how Government and businesses are working together in the run up to Brexit, and to hear about the great work that companies like BASF are doing with local schools.

Recruitment Starts for New Officers

It's clear from my crime survey ([link removed]) that people want to see new Police Officers 'on the beat' as soon as possible. The launch of the recruitment drive yesterday was good news and Greater Manchester is one of the forces hiring now, so if you or anyone you know wants to be one of the first 6,000 then you can find out more here ([link removed]) .

Referendum - Thursday 12th September

Next week, people in Woodford will get the chance to vote on the Woodford Neighbourhood Plan. This has been developed by Woodford Neighbourhood Forum (WNF) over a number of years to set out a vision for the area's future when it comes to the environment, housing and more.

I have supported WNF's efforts to develop this plan and hope that it will be supported by residents next week. You can view the plan at woodfordnf.co.uk ([link removed]) , and if you are a resident then make sure that you take your chance to have a say on Woodford's future!

The Week Behind Us, and the Week Ahead...

It is safe to say that the past week has been one of the more eventful in British politics, and next week is shaping up to be just as eventful.

This week I voted against mandating our Prime Minister to request another extension to Article 50. However, the majority in Parliament supported a new law forcing a delay to Brexit until next year. The Prime Minister has ruled this out, therefore a choice was given to the opposition parties to have an early General Election. After spending months demanding one, they said no.

As things stand, the Prime Minister will again ask MPs on Monday to sanction a General Election for 15th October. I will vote in favour of this again, and hope that this time the opposition parties decide to act in the national interest in order to bring this to a resolution.

My Views

In addition to regular casework correspondence, I receive a number of campaign emails and postcards each month regarding various topics. While I always prefer to get back to people directly in the first instance, each month I publish these views on my website. You can read these here ([link removed]) .

Surgeries

I hold regular surgeries both at my office in Cheadle Hulme and around the constituency. If you would like an appointment then please do get in touch via the details below and let me know the issues you'd like assistance with. It may be possible that I can help you right away.

Thank you for taking the time to read my latest e-newsletter. As ever, if there are any issues you'd like to raise with me then please do get in touch.
