The Provincial Growth Fund is making a huge difference in our regions.

Our 'Back Your Future' tour was a great opportunity to see the opportunities being created by our flagship policy for the regions.

In Wairoa, the PGF funded projects for IT training to help young New Zealanders engage with the digital space.

The Napier-Wairoa line, which had been mothballed for years, has been revived thanks to the PGF.

It is a vital cog in Wairoa's local economy and New Zealand First ensured that this rail line would be back on track again.

These investments have injected new life into Wairoa, like the other provincial towns and cities that have benefited from the PGF.

While other parties are happy to ignore these towns, New Zealand First is committed to Backing the Future of our regions.

What’s new

New Zealand First will lower the tobacco excise tax

New Zealand First will lower tobacco excise so that the average pack of cigarettes is no more than $20.

We will also remove tax from smoking cessation tools. A competent health strategy would look at subsidising alternatives to help long term smokers quit instead.

The Rt Hon Winston Peters said: "We need to stop punishing smokers with high excise tax and help them quit by making affordable alternatives available."

Projects include oyster production, water, horticulture production, a smoke house, a digital regional hub, a kauri tourism venture, and a number of fencing and waterways projects and renovations of community spaces.

These initiatives funded through the Provincial Growth Fund will provide immediate jobs and security for locals.

Over the long term, these projects have the ability to open up more economic growth opportunities in Northland and lift the prosperity and wellbeing of its local communities.
