Friend,

I know what it's like to root hard for the place you call home.

When I took on the entrenched political machine in my first campaign for Newark mayor in 2002, I lost. But when you love a place so much, you stop at nothing to help it succeed. And when I ran again in 2006, we won -- now, more folks are moving to Newark to start a business, a life, and a family. It's a testament to what we built and our commitment to never give up on home.

And that's why I root for my friend Jay. Jay's never given up on home either. He was so true to his principles that when he voted on an assault weapons ban during his time in Congress, he lost his seat. But he didn't give up: He kept working as a public servant and eventually championed and signed major gun safety legislation in Washington state as governor.

When you love where you're from, it shows. I love New Jersey as much as he loves Washington state, and we're both fighting for better for the people we represent, from the capitol in Olympia to the halls of the United States Senate. It takes heart, and it takes courage -- Jay has both.
