In the new year, we recommit ourselves to welcoming every person seeking safety
and freedom.
Dear John,
This past year has been particularly challenging for all of us and has
reinforced just how precious and precarious life is. This is perhaps even truer
for the world’s displaced people, who have been made more vulnerable by the
Coronavirus pandemic.
As the dawn of a new year approaches, we are committed to ensuring that all
those fleeing violence and persecution are able to find a safe place to call
home and to rebuild their lives with dignity.
Jewish tradition refers to Rosh Hashanah, the New Year, as “ Yom Teruah – the day of sounding.” Together, each and every day of the year to come, let
us continue to loudly sound the call to welcome the stranger in our midst.
On behalf of the HIAS staff and board, I wish you a happy, healthy new year and
thank you for your partnership in making the world a better place for refugees
and asylum seekers everywhere.
Shanah tovah.
