Pew Research Center data released in August shows that 70% of Americans who regularly attend religious services believe their congregations should be open -- despite only 12% of U.S. adults telling pollsters they’d attended in-person services in the last month.

That hasn’t stopped several churches from suing state governments over so-called “religious liberty” violations -- with ABC News reporting that a conservative legal group has helped houses of worship in California and Minnesota launch courtroom battles for the right to disregard public health guidelines.

And many churches are holding gatherings no matter what the courts say, with one California pastor telling his flock: “We will obey God rather than men. He will be on our side.”
